Wellington is a compact city where many households have off-street parking, but its terrain and older housing make local knowledge matter more here than almost anywhere else. A charger install on a flat Lower Hutt section is a very different job from one at a Karori hillside home with the garage three levels below the street. The hill suburbs: cable runs are the cost driver

Karori, Khandallah, Wadestown, Brooklyn and the Aro Valley are classic Wellington — steep sections where the garage or off-street park can sit a full storey or two below the house and switchboard. The charger itself is standard, but the cable run is where a hillside quote climbs: more cable, more labour, and sometimes conduit down an exterior wall or bank. A clear photo of the route from your switchboard to where the car parks helps an installer price it accurately the first time rather than padding for the unknown.

Older inner-city villas and switchboards

Mount Victoria, Thorndon, Newtown, Berhampore and Island Bay are full of pre-1990s villas and bungalows, and their switchboards are the most common reason a central Wellington quote runs higher. Many predate modern RCD/RCBO protection or are simply full, so a switchboard upgrade has to happen before a dedicated EV circuit can be added safely (typically around +$1,500–$3,000). The Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kāpiti

Out on the flat — Lower and Upper Hutt, Porirua, and up the Kāpiti Coast to Paraparaumu and Waikanae — installs are usually the most straightforward in the region. Newer subdivisions in Kāpiti and the northern suburbs often have a modern switchboard with a spare way and the garage close to the supply, so a tidy single-phase 7kW job sits in the typical range. A smart charger makes the most of Wellington’s off-peak power windows here, where overnight charging is easy.
